Workshop Uruguay 2024

Fantastic Workshop Uruguay 2024:

Nurturing Future Filmmakers

The second edition of the Fantastic Workshop in Uruguay has just concluded, bringing together two teams of film students from Montevideo for a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of genre cinema. This initiative, organized by ACAU, BIFFF, and BIF Market, with the support of Air Europa, exemplifies the collaborative spirit of fostering new talent in the international genre film community.

A Hands-On Filmmaking Experience

Over three intensive days, participants worked under the guidance of Belgian director Véronique Jadin, known for her expertise in genre storytelling. Their mission? To create two short genre films, working in professional conditions and honing their skills through collaboration and creativity.

The workshop’s results were nothing short of extraordinary:

  • Captoras de Alma, directed by Chiara Gutiérrez, representing the CURE University team.
  • Espiritia, directed by Facundo Balza, representing the UCU University team.

These short films, developed with determination and talent, showcase the budding creativity of these young filmmakers.

A Celebration of Creativity

The workshop concluded with a special screening event on December 6, where both films were presented to an enthusiastic audience. The evening was a celebration of creativity and perseverance, culminating in the announcement of the Fantastic Workshop Award.

Chiara Gutiérrez, director of Captoras de Alma, received the award for her remarkable talent and relentless spirit.

Chiara, accompanied by a teammate, will attend the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) 2025 with full accreditations for both BIFFF and the BIF Market. This exciting opportunity is made possible thanks to Air Europa, which is providing the flights to Belgium, and Best Western Royal Centre, which is offering accommodation during the festival.

An International Collaboration

Our team was proud to be on-site in Montevideo, alongside ACAU members, to witness the passion and commitment of these young filmmakers. The beautiful Uruguayan landscapes provided an inspiring backdrop for this cinematic journey, and the collaborative atmosphere reflected the vibrant energy of all involved.

The Fantastic Workshop is more than just a learning experience — it is a platform that highlights new voices in genre cinema and strengthens international collaboration. After the screenings, a reception hosted by hub.brussels allowed participants to celebrate their achievements and share their experiences.

We extend our gratitude to all the sponsors and partners who made this workshop possible. Their support is instrumental in bridging continents, connecting creators, and nurturing the future of genre cinema.

As we look forward to BIF Market 2024, taking place from April 15th to 19th, we are confident that these talented students will continue to shape the future of fantastic film. The journey of creativity and collaboration continues, and we are proud to be part of it.
